Why we are unable to talk about better health?

Because I Blame Myself? Or is it Because You Blame Me?

It's not socially acceptable to discuss someone else's health, or appearance, or illness, except in certain controlled situations. "It's none of your business!"

Each of us can hide in a personal fortress, by denying that poor health exists. We can make or own decisions about our own lives. We can create a story about ourselves, and believe it. Society will generally "enable" whatever story we create, unless it impinges on the law of the land, or the rights of others.

In most places there are very strict social and political distinctions between what is personal, what is known among friends and what is public. Nobody wants to be told what to do. but sometimes that's necessary, or at least would be better. Of course you can cheat, cheating is something we all do, but you can't cheat against the nature's rules and win.

C. Everett Koop, USA Surgeon General from 1982 to 1989, became concerned about the causes of modern diseases. That made him very unpopular with his political masters, and industry. Perhaps also with many of the public.

The Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome

Graphic

The harm done by smoking and alcohol is bad enough, but in comparison the harm done by our faulty diet is many times greater. It's also highly preventable, maybe not across our society, but it is preventable in your life.

Graph

This graph (right) shows that a few of us develop Metabolic Syndrome early in life, but between the ages of 40 and 49 it really becomes common. People over 50 all seem to be on the path to poor health, and we call it aging. That's the mistake we make, it's the breakdown of your normal metabolism that is supposed to keep you well, that is the problem. On the left you see that diet is the primary factor in causing Metabolic Syndrome

Rx means the doctor can diagnose a condition and write a prescription for it.

High fasting insulin is not a test doctors commonly request. They use fasting glucose as a proxy. But it's not the same thing. For a long time your fasting glucose is corrected, but only because your fasting insulin is very high. You can only know about what you choose to measure.

In family situation how often do we see this: "My own mother won't listen to me. She won't change her diet even though she's in pain every day."

"Mother cannot believe that diet she's eaten for 40 years is causing her pain."

Displacing Modern Foods Drive Poor Health

Graphic

The white area, refined and processed foods, vegetable (seed) oils, added sugars, processing fruit as juice, is more than 50% of our diet. These have DISPLACED real food.

The glucose spike roller coaster. Continuously hungry.

The US Dietary Guidelines have recommended that we eat these foods. "Vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products, seafood, lean meats and poultry, eggs, beans and peas (legumes), and nuts and seeds that are prepared without added solid fats, added sugars, and sodium."

Unfortunately, this low fat diet, has allowed the introduction of "modern foods" mostly made from only five things; wheat, rice, soy beans, corn and seed oils, made more palatable with sugars. Industry was keen to increase the sales of highly profitable modern foods.

In response to the recommended diet, compared with 50 years ago, people are eating much less butter and lard, fewer eggs, and less red meat. They are also eating more grains and plant based oils. The modern diet doesn't lack calories, it lacks nutrition.

Always hungry? Processed foods digest quickly, give you a glucose high, followed by a glucose low, which you assume is hunger. So you eat again, more of the same calories, but little nutrition, 6 or even 8 times a day. Insulin is always high, and your are getting sicker and sicker. There is a solution, FEED yourself with real food. Most people just need to eat more high quality protein, red meat and fish will do it.

It's NOT the Fault of the Individual

The system is broken because expert opinion, and scientific evidence, are often not compatible. The experience of individuals (N=1) is discounted, when often that's the missing evidence needed. Black swans need to be explained.

It's not his fault. The environment in which we live is unhealthy. The system is full of propaganda and commercial spin. There is enormous pressure to sustain the status quo. The political process is controlled by the flow of cash for those with institutional and business interests. Do not wait for the government, or the Ministry of Health, to protect you.
