Expert

My Background

I was brought up in the County of Wexford, Ireland. Most of my education, was in Belfast finishing off with degrees in Chemistry and Agricultural Chemistry from Queen’s University. I spent 5 years at the National Institute for Research in Dairying and was awarded a PhD from the University of Reading. This was followed by a period at the University of Bradford, where I established the Food Policy Research Unit. The main focus of the Unit was to conduct research various issues related to the production and consumption of food. In 1990 I started a business Verner Wheelock Associates, which provides training and consultancy for food companies.

The business is now managed by my daughter Alison, while I spend most of my time campaigning for a total re-vamp of the official healthy eating recommendations that recognise the benefits of a diet based on a diet low in sugar/ carbohydrates and high in healthy fats (Low Carb. High Fat / LCHF).

Public Confusion about Healthy Eating

The big problem is that many people are very confused about what exactly is meant by “Healthy Eating”. The comment I hear time and time again is “I don’t know who to believe”.

I have almost completed my book, which is entitled:“Healthy Eating” – the biggest mistake in medical history.

This is not the best quality video, but the discussion is sensible.

My Verner's Views Blog

First Post in January 2013. Post number 250 published in December 2016. (Book on the way.)

I add to my blog fairly regularly and I hope this will make a small contribution to public knowledge. Make no mistake, we are in the middle of a major struggle to achieve change. To succeed, we will have to create pressure from the grassroots. I hope that others will be persuaded to join the fray.

So I am keen to disseminate reliable information on all aspects of diet and health. There are very powerful commercial and professional interests that wish to maintain the status quo because it is to their advantage.

I want to encourage people to interact by sharing their experiences so that they can help to spread the word. If patients can overcome their conditions by changing their diet the demand for drugs will be reduced substantially.

Wrote "Implementing Dietary Guidelines for Healthy Eating" published in 1997

Introduction to an Alternative View on Nutrition #LowCarb

For the past 30 years or so, Healthy Eating has been actively promoted by governments, public health professions with support from the food industries. It is now evident many people are actively implementing the dietary recommendations. Despite this, the incidence of obesity continues to increase to such an extent that it is now regarded as a major public health issue. Because of this apparent anomaly I have conducted a detailed investigation into the scientific evidence which forms the basis of the conventional dietary guidelines.

The more I explored the more convinced I became that the current advice on Healthy Eating is fundamentally flawed.

In fact it is highly likely that this advice is not only ineffective but is actually responsible for the increasing incidence of many of the diseases which are prevalent in our society to-day.

I have built up a huge volume of information which I believe would be of great interest to many people and so I have decided to share this through my blog. The key issues which I intend to address will include the following:

Reasons why much of the current advice on Healthy Eating is wrong Explanations of key research which leads to the conclusions that

a) Fat in the diet is not a health issue
b) The real danger from a dietary perspective is carbohydrates

Outline the very simple changes that can easily be made your regular diet, which will improve your prospects of enjoying a long and healthy life.

At the outset I must emphasise that I am totally independent and have no hidden vested interest. My sole purpose is to present objective information which is based on careful evaluation of the relevant background and scientific evidence.
